The Blog spam, it grows!
I'm noticing a stupid amount of blog spam in the past three weeks or so. They all seem to come from various addresses; they all post the same garbage, usually to the very first blog entry (the Auto Assault one).
On a lark, I clicked on one of the spams, and it brought me to another site which redirected to yet ANOTHER site. This new site informed me that my Windows Media Player needed an updated codec, and I should click to install it.
I'm not surprised WMP couldn't handle the content... after all, I was using Firefox on Solaris. Funny, that.
Anyway, whether you click yea or nay, it tries to force you to download "wmcodec_update.exe". For those playing the home game, this is obviously a trojan. Some research shows that this might actually be the latest thing from the Russian Business Network (the online-crime arm of the Russian mafia).
I'm quite surprised to find that not a whole lot of people are talking about this. I'm guessing that the sites doing the spamming are themselves trojaned machines, so I'd at least figure people would be discussing how THOSE sites are getting hacked...
